Description
WooCommerce shows a blank placeholder for any category without its own thumbnail set — and setting one means opening every category one at a time and uploading an image by hand. The free plugins that exist for this (a few small, actively-used ones on wordpress.org) all work the same way: they borrow an existing product’s photo from inside that category. That’s a reasonable shortcut, but it only works once the category already has products with their own featured images — a brand-new category, or one that’s temporarily empty while stock is being added, still shows nothing.
This imports an actual, relevant photo for the category itself, so it gets a real thumbnail immediately regardless of what products are in it yet. Only ever fills a thumbnail that’s currently missing — a category with one already set is left untouched, so it’s safe to run across an entire catalog without undoing any thumbnail picked by hand.
